This book is extremely thorough and has plenty of practice to work with, which is something I commend. However, the one thing that sets this book back is a lacking cultural notes section. While the cultural notes section covers plenty of topics, the formatting is atrocious. By having a Hanyu pinyin section as a whole separate paragraph, it's confusing and difficult to line up with the actual text. Therefore, it's of little help when reading the cultural section. Furthermore, there were several typos throughout where there were some traditional characters mixed into the passage that should be simplified characters. While this book was very beneficial to studying, the lacking cultural notes section is why I can't give this five stars.
I'm a teacher for teaching Chinese to foreign student. The design of unit is not effective for learning and practice.
It has its pros and cons, but I'll start with what I like about the product. (I took the test 3 months ago and scored a 5. I speak Mandarin at home, but was almost illiterate when entering the Chinese language program in my high school. I built up some very basic vocabulary over 4 years, but ultimately, bought this book to try to cram. So knowing my background, take my advice as you will).Pros: The CD that the book includes has a lot of different oral practice tests, and doing these will REALLY help you on the actual exam. The difficulty and style of the voice recordings is pretty much identical to what you'll see on the test.Cons: The actual book itself isn't so hot. It has practice questions that are okay, but if you need to CRAM and you don't know how to read Chinese that well, this book will not help you much. It pretty much assumes that your Chinese level is very advanced, and gives whole passages in just Chinese. They even explain Chinese culture IN CHINESE... which is fairly difficult to read, even for me, a native speaker of the language. They do have English translations, but the point of studying is for you to be able to learn and recognize specific words and what they mean. There's something called pinyin (which spells out chinese words with english letters) that really helps, but this book doesn't include pinyin at all. Also, this book includes both traditional and simplified versions for the Chinese passages (for Chinese characters, the traditional way of writing them became outdated, so they created a new "simplified" version of writing the characters that was derived from traditional) But don't pay the traditional version any attention if you want to spend your time wisely. The whole AP exam is in simplified.Overall: I gave this book a quick glance through. I honestly couldn't read most of the content and definitely not the cultural section. But some simpler multiple choice helped me out a bit. The place where I would spend the most time is the CD recording, which will help you loads on the oral section of the test. Ultimately, it will help you boost your score. But just realize that the book isn't designed that well, and sometimes if you don't understand how to read it, it's not a huge problem. Just use it to get used to the type of problems you'll see on the test, and learn vocabulary from somewhere else.
This book was very useful when studying for the AP Chinese exam, definitely helped. This version also includes a CD with audio, and the audio is very authentic to what the actual AP will include. Recommend to anyone struggling to study for the AP, but not necessary, depends on your situation. This won't teach much additional vocab, but will help you know what the test will be like.
Exactly what I need and excellent shipment! From everything that I have read, this is a good book. I definitely recommend it to all.
My daughter needed this for her AP class and is making good headway as a result.
