Sean McIndoe of Down Goes Brown, one of hockey's favorite and funniest writers, takes aim at the game's most memorable moments - especially if they're memorable for the wrong reasons - in this warts-and-all history of the NHL.

The NHL is, indisputably, weird. One moment, you're in awe of the speed, skill, and intensity that define the sport, shaking your head as a player makes an impossible play, or shatters a longstanding record, or sobs into his first Stanley Cup. The next, everyone's wearing earmuffs, Mr. Rogers has shown up, and guys in yellow raincoats are officiating playoff games while everyone tries to figure out where the league president went. That's just life in the NHL, a league that often can't seem to get out of its own way. No matter how long you've been a hockey fan, you know that sinking feeling that maybe, just maybe, some of the people in charge here don't actually know what they're doing. And at some point, you've probably wondered: Has it always been this way?

The short answer is yes. As for the longer answer, well, that's this audiobook.

In this fun, irreverent, and fact-filled history, Sean McIndoe relates the flip side to the National Hockey League's storied past. His obsessively detailed memory combines with his keen sense for the absurdities that make you shake your head at the league and yet fanatically love the game, allowing you to laugh even when your team is the butt of the joke (and as a life-long Leafs fan, McIndoe takes the brunt of some of his own best zingers). The "Down Goes Brown" History of the NHL is the weird and wonderful league's story told as only Sean McIndoe can.

One of the most unique voices in hockey journalism has written his first full-length original book and it lives up to his lofty goal of making it both educational as well as fun. Secrets of how Rangers would have had Gordie Howe if they hadn't been stocked by a bunch of obnoxious New Yorkers, where the Predators got the pick they used to draft Shea Weber, how the first outdoor game of the modern NHL was played in a Las Vegas parking lot, why the NHL chose to use a wheel to see who got to pick Gilbert Perrault (and why they flipped a coin to pick who got to spin it), as well as a (more) serious look at the history of violence in hockey and what happens to the league when they invent a way to test for brain damage on a living person, are explained in just enough detail. That should suggest that you will need a certain baseline familiarity with the NHL - particularly the 80s and 90s - to get full entertainment value out of it. That said, it's just a baseline. The joke about Pierre Dagenais can be understood even if you don't remember him. I read the book in a little under four hours during an plane flight, so again, not a heavy lift.

I've been reading Sean McIndoe's online columns for most of this decade, so when I saw he was releasing a book on hockey history, there was no question that I would buy it, read it, and love it. What McIndoe does here is rather brilliant, not unlike his articles -- he merges his cleverly sardonic writing style with deep and informed research. In other words, he takes what could in other hands be either dry or overly irreverent material and makes it both extremely entertaining and remarkably intelligent. Personally, given my career path, I have very little time to do "pleasure reading," but I made the exception for DGB's history, and I'm glad I did. Now I feel well-equipped to regale friends at dinner parties with stories of water bottle warfare, ineffective earmuffs, and draft selections that never existed. If *that* doesn't sell you on the book, I don't know what will...

I’ve been a DGB fan for a while now and this book certainly lives up to his standard. Packed with stories you won’t get in a “normal” NHL history and presented in a manner that makes it fun and easily digestible, Sean not only finds a way to break the literary neutral-zone trap, but also abolish the literary offside challenge while he’s at it. OK, maybe he didn’t do all that, but this book is great fun and you should buy it too. Oh, I also miss his Biscuits podcast. I just want that on the record.

I was so happy to find out that Down Goes Brown had written a book, and so happy to have purchased it and read it, It is a easy breeze through the history of the league, with laugh out loud stories all the way through. The book spends a lot of time covering the 90's - the modern era, which is great because so many NHL books were written during another era.

McIndoe does a very nice job of hitting the high points of NHL history and absurdity in 250 pages. This isn’t an exhaustive study of the league, nor is it meant to be. I consider myself a “business casual” fan of the league (it’s squarely my #4 of the big four leagues), but I definitely learned a few things and had a couple of good laughs and good memories remembering my heyday as a fan growing up in the 80s and 90s. Definitely recommended.

My first thought after finishing the book was that the author is head over heels in love with hockey. Fact and funny meet head on in a really interesting, informative and humorous chronological history of professional hockey in North America. Best sports book I've read since Ball Four

I Lol throw out the book and had to Google plays teams players to watch old games learned about nhl i grow up watch only during.playoff after bingo season over . To get sabers tickets from 2006 to 2017 I love this game

If you like hockey, and humor this book is for you.
